📍 Croatia
Španjola Fortress, also known as Fortica, crowns the hill above Hvar Town and overlooks the harbor that its defenses once guarded. Built in its present form under Venetian rule, the fortress frames the town’s historic core as a tight pattern of pale stone walls and terracotta roofs, with the waterfront curving around the marina below. Beyond, the low, wooded Pakleni Islands break the Adriatic into layered channels, giving the view its distinctive depth. From the ramparts, photographs can combine weathered limestone, defensive walls, church towers, boats and open sea in a single composition; the steep hillside also makes the scale and compact layout of Hvar especially clear.
