Route des Crêtes follows the heights of Cap Canaille between Cassis and La Ciotat, tracing one of the Mediterranean coast’s most dramatic cliff landscapes. From its overlooks, Cassis appears clustered around its harbor, backed by pale limestone and the rugged Calanques, while the sea opens southward in an uninterrupted field of blue. The route’s ochre and rust-colored cliffs contrast sharply with the lighter limestone west of town, revealing the area’s changing geology. Broad panoramas, sheer vertical scale, winding road lines and low coastal vegetation define the photographs made here, especially when angled light emphasizes the rock strata. The road can close during strong winds or periods of high wildfire risk, so access conditions should be checked locally.
