Piazzetta dei Fornelli is a small lookout square in the heart of Volterra's compact medieval centre, set along the town’s narrow lanes and ancient stone buildings. Its interest comes from the contrast between the intimate, masonry-clad piazza and the wide Tuscan valley that unfolds below: olive groves, tilled fields and the low, undulating ridges that frame the town. For photographers the spot offers a layered composition — textured foreground of weathered stone walls and iron railings against a soft, expansive landscape — and a clear sense of scale when a figure leans on the balustrade. Light from low sun emphasizes warm ochres in the local alabaster-stone façades and brings out valley mist or long shadows in cooler months; framing from the piazza’s corners gives pleasing symmetry with Volterra’s towers and streets behind you. The square is reached on foot through the historic centre.
