Molde occupies the northern shore of Moldefjorden, with the town descending toward the water and a broad sweep of mountains rising across the fjord. The celebrated Molde Panorama is traditionally described as encompassing 222 peaks, many belonging to the rugged Romsdal Alps. From elevated viewpoints such as Varden, the scene layers red and pale rooftops, wooded slopes, islands, reflective water, and distant summits into a distinctive cross-section of western Norway. Snow lingering on the higher peaks sharpens their outlines, while shifting cloud and low northern light can rapidly change the fjord from silvery blue to deep slate.
