Miranda de Santa Magdalena is a rocky lookout high in the Montserrat massif, above the Benedictine monastery in Catalonia. Its panorama brings together rounded conglomerate towers, deeply cut ravines and the lowlands stretching beyond the mountain. Erosion has shaped these pebble-rich rocks into the serrated skyline reflected in Montserrat’s name, “sawn mountain.” The nearby remains of the Santa Magdalena hermitage connect the landscape with the hermits who once sought solitude above the abbey. From this elevated position, the contrast between the bulky rock pinnacles and the distant plains makes the mountain’s unusual form and scale especially clear.
