The tower of Toruń’s Cathedral of St John the Baptist and St John the Evangelist overlooks the compact Old Town beside the Vistula. This brick Gothic church is closely linked to the city’s history: Nicolaus Copernicus was baptized here, and its tower houses the Tuba Dei bell, cast in 1500. From above, red-tiled roofs, steep gables, church towers and the Old Town Hall’s tower reveal the tightly packed layout of the medieval trading city. Beyond the southern edge of the historic centre, the Vistula opens a broad horizontal sweep, contrasting with the dense roofscape and the greenery across the water. That meeting of brick architecture and river landscape gives the panorama its distinctive character and makes Toruń’s historic connection to river trade visually clear.
