Hvíthamar is a mountain viewpoint above Funningur on Eysturoy, near the Gjáarskarð pass on the road toward Gjógv. It overlooks Funningsfjørður, where a narrow arm of the sea lies between steep, grass-covered mountains. Funningur’s houses gather along the shore below, giving a human scale to the surrounding landscape. Dark rock bands break up the green slopes, while the fjord’s curve leads the eye toward overlapping mountain ridges. The elevated perspective makes the relationship between village, sea and terrain especially clear: settlement occupies a small strip of shoreline beneath the much larger sweep of the mountains.
