Henrietta Street follows the lower slopes of Whitby’s East Cliff, just beyond the foot of the 199 Steps, overlooking the harbour entrance. Its old cottages and Fortune’s traditional kipper smokehouse connect this corner of the town with Whitby’s fishing heritage. Below lies Tate Hill Sands, while across the water the buildings of West Cliff rise above the harbour in a layered skyline. The harbour piers extend toward the North Sea, giving the view strong lines and a clear sense of the town’s coastal setting. Red pantile roofs, weathered masonry and the contrast between the enclosed harbour and open sea make this a distinctly Whitby scene.
