Forte Duque de Caxias, also known as Forte do Leme, crowns Morro do Leme at the northern end of Copacabana. Its elevated military position once helped defend the approach to Guanabara Bay; today, the former gun emplacements overlook one of Rio’s clearest meetings of landscape and city. The panorama takes in Sugarloaf Mountain, the bay entrance, forested slopes, the Atlantic, and the long curve of Leme and Copacabana beaches, with dense waterfront towers emphasizing the scale of the surrounding granite peaks. The fort is reached by an uphill route through protected Atlantic Forest and remains within a Brazilian Army area, so visitor access follows military schedules and controls.
