The views from Faro Voltiano unfold above San Maurizio, a hamlet of Brunate on Monte Tre Croci, high over Como and the southern end of Lake Como. The octagonal lighthouse was erected in 1927 to mark the centenary of the death of Alessandro Volta, the Como-born pioneer of electricity; it is a commemorative monument rather than a maritime beacon. From the tower and surrounding clearings, the scene layers the lake basin, Como’s dense rooftops, wooded slopes and the distant Po Valley.
