Dunluce Castle stands on a basalt outcrop along County Antrim’s north coast, just outside Bushmills in Northern Ireland. The ruined stronghold, reached from the mainland by a bridge, was associated with the MacQuillan and later MacDonnell clans; much of its surviving fabric reflects rebuilding during the 16th and 17th centuries. From the castle, the Atlantic fills the horizon while sheer cliffs, sea-carved rock and the green headlands create a dramatic sense of exposure. Roofless walls and window openings frame sections of coast, and shifting maritime light can move quickly from muted grey stone to bright water and grass, giving the view its distinctive contrast.
