Views from Cortina d’Ampezzo reveal the town’s dramatic setting in the broad Ampezzo Valley of the Italian Dolomites, surrounded by the pale limestone walls of the Tofane, Cristallo, Pomagagnon and Sorapiss groups. From streets and meadows around the center, traditional houses and the slender bell tower of the Basilica of Saints Philip and James provide human scale against the immense peaks. The scene changes distinctly with the seasons: winter snow sharpens the contrast between forests and rock, autumn turns the larches gold, and low sunlight can tint the Dolomite cliffs pink and orange in the phenomenon known as enrosadira. Cortina’s Ladin heritage and long history as an Alpine resort add cultural depth to a skyline defined by rugged summits, wooded slopes and open mountain light.
