📍 France
Chamrousse sits on the western side of the Belledonne massif, high above Grenoble in the French Alps. Its slopes overlook the Grenoble basin, with the limestone ridges of the Vercors and Chartreuse forming a contrasting mountain backdrop. The resort hosted alpine skiing events during the 1968 Grenoble Winter Olympics, linking this landscape to the region’s sporting history. Around the Croix de Chamrousse, at 2,253 metres, the panorama also opens onto Belledonne’s rugged high terrain. The distinctive visual contrast is one of scale: the densely built valley lies far below open mountain slopes, softened by snow in winter and patterned with alpine grassland and exposed rock in summer.
