Cap Blanc-Nez is the high chalk headland just northwest of Sangatte that crowns the French side of the Strait of Dover; from its grassy plateau you look out over the busy channel toward the white cliffs of England and the shipping lanes where ferries and freighters cross. The sheer chalk escarpment and turf-top create strong horizontal bands of white, green and blue that read clearly in photographs, while the scarp’s weathered chalk shows vertical fractures and runnels that catch low light. On clear days the opposite coastline and distant headlands give a layered horizon; wind-swept grasses along the path and the scale of people near the edge help convey the cliffs’ height and exposure. The site’s visual drama comes from wide panoramas, crisp coastal lines and changing light across sea and chalk.
