Views from Basilica di Superga
📍 Italy
From the hilltop Basilica di Superga, east of Turin, the panorama stretches across the city and the Po plain toward the Alps. The elevated viewpoint reveals Turin’s ordered street grid within a wider landscape of river, wooded hills and distant mountains, whose outlines become especially distinct in clear weather. The basilica is itself a major Baroque landmark: designed by Filippo Juvarra for the House of Savoy, its tall dome and columned portico rise prominently above the hillside. It was built in fulfillment of Victor Amadeus II’s vow during the 1706 siege of Turin and houses Savoy royal tombs. Behind the church, a memorial commemorates the 1949 air disaster that killed the Grande Torino football team, adding a poignant chapter to a site closely tied to the city’s identity.
