Rising to 3,842 metres above Chamonix, the Aiguille du Midi is a granite peak in the Mont Blanc massif, with viewing terraces accessed by cable car from the valley and a lift to the summit terrace. Mont Blanc’s broad, snow-covered dome contrasts with jagged rock needles and the crevassed glaciers around the Vallée Blanche. Looking down toward Chamonix reveals the immense vertical separation between the inhabited valley and this high-alpine landscape. Metal walkways, railings and buildings anchored to the rock give the views a distinctive sense of scale: visitors and engineering appear small against the surrounding ridges, while snow and ice emphasize the dark granite’s fractured texture.
