📍 From Victoria Terrace, United Kingdom
Victoria Street curves downhill from George IV Bridge toward the Grassmarket, linking the upper streets of Edinburgh’s Old Town with its historic market area. Laid out in the 19th century to improve access through this steep part of the city, it has a distinctive two-level arrangement: colorful shopfronts line the lower street, while the raised walkway of Victoria Terrace runs above the north side. Tall stone buildings rise behind the painted façades, creating a contrast between the bright commercial frontage and the Old Town’s more restrained masonry. The street’s bend gathers these colors into a layered sweep, while views from the terrace reveal the changing levels, stone paving, and close-packed architecture that give this corner of Edinburgh its recognizable shape.
