Viaduc de Millau
📍 France
The Viaduc de Millau spans the Tarn valley beside Creissels, just south of Millau in the Aveyron département of southern France. Opened in 2004, it carries the A75 motorway across a landscape of limestone plateaus and steep valley slopes, bypassing the town below. Designed by engineer Michel Virlogeux and architect Norman Foster, the cable-stayed bridge stretches 2,460 metres, with its highest mast reaching 343 metres above the ground. Seven slender concrete piers support a steel roadway, while fans of cables give the immense structure a remarkably light silhouette. Views from the surrounding hills reveal its scale against the valley’s fields, wooded slopes and scattered buildings; when low cloud fills the valley, the roadway and pylons can appear suspended above it.
