The Vestiges Gallo-romain du Castan are exposed archaeological remnants of Roman-era occupation in Besançon, remnants of the ancient town of Vesontio that lie within the modern urban fabric. They are visually interesting as material traces—cut stone foundations, masonry fragments and pavement fragments—that illustrate settlement layering where antiquity meets 19th–20th-century streets. Photographically, the site rewards close-up texture shots of weathered stone and mortar and wider compositions that frame the pale ruins against Besançon’s later buildings, showing scale and continuity.
