A vera da pozzo in Campo Santa Maria Mater Domini is a small but evocative piece of Venice’s civic and domestic infrastructure: a carved stone wellhead that once covered a communal cistern collecting rainwater for the neighborhood. Important as both a practical object and a civic emblem, the vera marks how Venetians managed freshwater on a lagoon island and signals the identity of the campo where it stands.
Typically fashioned from durable Istrian stone with an iron or bronze grating, the Vera Pozzo here displays modest sculptural detail—molded rim, carved panels and traces of heraldic or donor motifs—reflecting the Renaissance–early modern tradition of dressing functional objects with civic ornament. Its scale and workmanship relate to similar wellheads scattered through Venice’s sestieri, but its setting in the intimate Campo Santa Maria Mater Domini gives it character: the well sits amid a compact square of low palazzi, small churches and artisan workshops, where light and shadow accentuate the stonework. As a local curiosity, the vera remains a fixed reference point in the campo’s daily life and in seasonal neighborhood events; it’s often photographed against the backdrop of the campo’s narrow alleys and gallery-fronts, a reminder of Venice’s layered urban fabric.
