Veitshöchheim is a small Franconian town on the Main, immediately northwest of Würzburg. Its best-known landmark is Veitshöchheim Palace, once a summer residence of Würzburg’s prince-bishops, beside an elaborate Rococo court garden filled with clipped hedges, lakes, fountains, pavilions and sandstone figures. The compact historic center, riverside promenade and traditional buildings give the town a quieter counterpoint to nearby Würzburg. Photographs often gain depth from the garden’s long sightlines and symmetry, while the palace’s pale façade and the sculptural details stand out against dense greenery; along the Main, boats and reflections place the architecture within the river landscape that shaped the settlement.
