📍 Finland
Vanhankaupunginkoski is a stretch of rapids where the River Vantaa reaches Vanhankaupunginlahti bay, northeast of central Helsinki. The surrounding Vanhakaupunki district marks the area where Helsinki was founded in 1550, while the force of the water later supported mills, waterworks and industry. Today the rapids form a striking contrast with the nearby red-brick utility buildings and the calmer wetlands of the bay. Footbridges and riverbank paths reveal different views of foaming channels, stone embankments and historic industrial architecture; the scene is especially dynamic when the river runs high. Nearby buildings housing the Museum of Technology reflect the site’s long connection with Helsinki’s water supply and technical development.
