📍 Malta
Valletta City Gate, also referred to as Porta Reale in Maltese, is a triumphal entrance to Valletta, the capital city of Malta. Built between 1853 and 1864, the City Gate stands as a prominent reminder of the city’s rich past. A classic example of fortified architecture, the entrance features two imposing towers flanking powerful fortifications with a large barbican. Visitors today can take a peek at the elaborate gate on Merchants Street and can also take a guided tour of the garrison chapel and courtyard on the same street. The fifteen-meter high gate’s inner chamber is adorned with intricate sculptures of lions, angels, and coats of arms. Not to mention a large bronze statue of King George VI, presented to the city by the British Government in 1947.
