📍 From NW 4th Avenue, United States
U.S. Bancorp Tower rises above the northern end of downtown Portland, Oregon, just south of West Burnside Street. Known locally as “Big Pink,” the 42-story office tower takes its nickname from its rose-colored granite and tinted glass, a distinctive combination in the city’s skyline. Completed in 1983 and designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, it has a parallelogram footprint rather than a conventional rectangular plan. Its sharply angled corners make the building appear broad from some streets and surprisingly narrow from others. Repeated bands of windows emphasize its height, while shifting light changes the balance between the pink stone and reflective glazing. From street level, the tower’s scale contrasts with the lower buildings of the surrounding downtown blocks.
