📍 Norway
Urnes stavkyrkje stands above the small village of Ornes on the shore of Lustrafjorden, a branch of the Sognefjord. Built around 1130, it is Norway’s oldest surviving stave church and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. Its architecture combines a Romanesque church plan with medieval Norwegian timber construction, while the north portal preserves richly interlaced animal and vine carvings reused from an earlier church. These carvings gave their name to the Urnes style, the final phase of Viking Age animal ornament. From outside, dark weathered boards, steep shingled roofs and the compact vertical silhouette contrast with the bright fjord, orchards and mountain slopes; close views of the portal reveal the extraordinary depth and rhythm of the woodwork.
