Universidad de Cartagena, in the old walled city of Cartagena de Indias, is the oldest university in Colombia. The beautiful, colonial-style building is located in the Plaza de la Universidad and open to visitors, who can explore its courtyards and squares. From the main entrance, you can glimpse a chapel, two towers, a library, a garden, and several smaller structures. These are surrounded by neoclassical buildings, making it a perfect example of colonial architecture. Inside, the buildings are filled with artwork, ancient documents, and military artifacts. The former hostelry of the university still stands, functioning as the seat of the Government of the Department of Bolívar. The university also has a famous library, possessing more than 26,000 volumes. Universidad de Cartagena is an interesting mix of colonial, academic and educational history. Don't miss it when in Cartagena!
