Uffizi Galleries
📍 From Inside, Italy
The Uffizi Galleries occupy a 16th-century complex between Piazza della Signoria and the Arno in Florence’s historic center. Their name means “offices”: Giorgio Vasari designed the buildings to house the administration of Cosimo I de’ Medici. The Medici collections became the foundation of a museum renowned for Italian Renaissance painting, with Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus and Primavera among its defining works. These paintings connect the gallery to the patronage, classical interests, and artistic innovation that shaped Renaissance Florence. Outside, the long, narrow courtyard offers a distinctive architectural perspective: repeated columns, deep porticoes, and statues in wall niches draw the eye toward the river. Inside, decorated corridors and views of the Ponte Vecchio place the collections within the city’s living riverfront rather than apart from it.
