U-Bahnhof Heidelberger Platz is a U3 station in Berlin’s Wilmersdorf district, directly linked to the Ringbahn S-Bahn station above. Opened in 1913 and designed by Wilhelm Leitgebel, it is distinguished by an unusually deep, cathedral-like platform hall, made possible by the need to pass beneath the railway tracks. Ribbed vaults, massive columns, ornamental surfaces and rows of globe lamps give the space a monumental character uncommon in Berlin’s underground network. From the center of the island platform, the repeating arches create strong symmetry and depth, while the warm artificial light emphasizes the masonry textures and historic detailing.
