Nehaj Fortress rises on a hill above Senj, where Croatia’s northern Adriatic coast meets the foothills of Velebit. Completed in 1558 under the military commander Ivan Lenković, it became a stronghold of the Uskoks, fighters whose resistance to Ottoman expansion and raids on Venetian shipping shaped the town’s history. Its compact, square form, thick stone walls, narrow openings and corner turrets express its defensive purpose. The exposed hilltop gives the fortress a distinctive silhouette above Senj, while views from its upper level connect the town’s red-tiled roofs with the Adriatic and offshore islands. Exhibitions inside explore the fortress and the Uskok legacy, adding historical context to this austere coastal landmark.
