📍 India
Tsomgo Lake, also known as Changu Lake, is a high-altitude glacial lake in East Sikkim, about 40 km from Gangtok on the road toward Nathula Pass. Set at roughly 3,750 metres amid steep Himalayan slopes, it is fed by snowmelt and holds spiritual significance for Sikkim’s Buddhist communities. Its appearance shifts strongly with the seasons: winter ice creates a pale, austere basin, while thawed water reflects surrounding ridges, prayer flags and changing mountain skies. The lake’s elongated shoreline and enclosing slopes give photographs a strong sense of scale, often complemented by decorated yaks and local activity near the visitor area. Because Tsomgo lies in a restricted border region, access requires an appropriate permit arranged before travel.
