Transfăgărășan
📍 Romania
The Transfăgărășan (DN7C) crosses the Făgăraș Mountains in Romania’s Southern Carpathians, linking Transylvania with Wallachia. Cârțișoara marks its northern approach, where the road climbs from the foothills through forest into open alpine terrain. Built in the 1970s as a strategic military route under Nicolae Ceaușescu, it is recognizable for the tightly stacked hairpin bends of its northern ascent. Viewed from above, these curves trace the steep Bâlea valley, with the narrow ribbon of asphalt emphasizing the scale of the surrounding slopes. Near the road’s highest point, Bâlea Lake fills a glacial basin, while a tunnel carries traffic beneath the mountain ridge. Snow closes the high crossing seasonally, so reaching Cârțișoara does not necessarily mean the full route is open.
