Tsumago-Juku is an old post town (or ‘shuku’) in Nagiso, Kiso Valley in the Nagano prefecture of Japan, located along the old Nakaseko Kaido, part of the Nakasendo route. It was the seventieth of the series of eighty-nine post stations that merchants and travelers used on the five hundred kilometer journey from Tokyo to Kyoto during the Edo period. It is listed as an important cultural preservation district and is full of traditional architecture and other cultural heritage features.

Building a road from Tokyo to Kyoto was a major project of the Shogunate and Tsumago-Juku, the seventieth post station, was the main attraction of the Nakasendō in Kiso Valley. The townscape of this old post town has been carefully maintained and is considered a window into the Edo period. Visitors can follow the same steps taken by the old travelers and explore the old warehouses, inns and storehouses. Many local activities can be found in Tsumago-Juku—including pottery, papercraft, and sake production—that showcase the traditional crafts and culture of its past inhabitants. Tsumago-Juku offers scenic mountain landscapes as well as traditional Japanese architectural features and is considered by many visitors to be a village that has changed little since the Edo period. Its preserved appearance has been used in many period film and TV shows, making it a popular attraction for photographers. Along the old Nakasendo road, visitors can see history come alive, and explore authentic Edo-style buildings as well as picturesque nature.
