Tower of London
📍 United Kingdom
The Tower of London is a fortified royal complex on the north bank of the Thames, beside Tower Bridge and the eastern edge of the City of London. Its oldest core, the White Tower, was begun by William the Conqueror in the 11th century as a symbol of Norman power. Over time the site served as a royal residence, prison, armoury, mint and treasury; today it houses the Crown Jewels and is closely associated with the Yeoman Warders and the Tower’s ravens. Concentric walls, battlements and pale stone towers create strong layers and symmetry from the former moat, while riverside views include the medieval water entrance known as Traitors’ Gate. The contrast between the fortress, Tower Bridge and London’s modern skyline is especially distinctive. Photography is prohibited inside the Jewel House, and visitors should follow posted restrictions in other interior spaces.
