📍 United Kingdom
The Towanroath shaft engine house is the cliff-edge landmark of Wheal Coates, a former tin and copper mine above Chapel Porth near St Agnes on Cornwall’s north coast. Built in 1872, it housed a steam engine that pumped water from the mine’s deep underground workings. Its roofless stone walls, tall chimney and empty window openings preserve the distinctive outline of a Cornish mining engine house, linking this coastal landscape to the region’s industrial history. The building’s upright silhouette contrasts with the sloping heathland and broad Atlantic horizon, while views along the cliffs place it within the rugged coastline rather than isolating it as a ruin. Gorse and heather add seasonal colour around the weathered masonry.
