Tour Saint-Nicolas rises at the entrance to La Rochelle’s Vieux Port, facing the Tour de la Chaîne across the narrow harbor channel. Built in the 14th century as part of the city’s maritime defenses, the massive stone tower helped guard access to a port central to La Rochelle’s trade and political power. Its irregular, fortress-like silhouette contrasts with the masts, waterfront façades and busy quays around the basin. From the harbor edges, the two towers create La Rochelle’s most recognizable gateway, especially when their pale limestone and reflections catch the low light. Interior stairways lead through vaulted chambers toward elevated views over the old port, the city roofs and the Atlantic approaches.
