The Torre Normanno-Sveva is a medieval defensive tower in the hilltop historic centre of Cisternino, built during the 12th–13th centuries when Norman and later Swabian rule shaped Apulia’s urban fabric. As part of the town’s fortifications, it anchors the compact cluster of stone houses and narrow alleys that define Cisternino’s silhouette. Visually it offers textured masonry and a vertical counterpoint to the whitewashed dwellings; light from low sun emphasizes the rough ashlar and casts deep shadows through adjacent lanes, making the tower a strong compositional element against sky or townscape. Its presence is best understood in relation to the surrounding borgo rather than as an isolated monument.
