Torre de Belém stands on the Tagus waterfront in Lisbon’s Belém district, where the city’s maritime history meets the broad river estuary. Built in the early 16th century to help defend the approach to Lisbon, it also became a lasting emblem of Portuguese overseas expansion. Its Manueline architecture combines military forms with elaborate decoration: carved stone ropes, royal emblems, arcaded balconies, and small domed watchtowers soften the fortress’s defensive profile. A square tower rises above a low, projecting artillery bastion, giving the monument its distinctive stepped silhouette. Viewed from the waterfront, the pale limestone stands against the wide river and open sky; closer views reveal the contrast between the bastion’s heavy walls and the delicate carving of the river-facing loggia.
