Toripolliisi
📍 Finland
Toripolliisi is the iconic bronze statue of a market policeman that presides over Oulu’s central Market Square (Kauppatori). Sculpted by Kaarlo Mikkonen and unveiled in 1987, the figure commemorates the small, locally rooted market policemen who for decades kept order and assisted vendors and townspeople at the busy riverside trading hub. Its colloquial name—Toripolliisi—comes from a Northern Finnish dialect: “tori” (market) + “polliisi” (policeman).

The sculpture is crafted in a realistic, approachable style and is installed at bench level, inviting visitors to sit beside it for photographs; this accessibility contributes to its role as a beloved city symbol and customary meeting point. Architecturally it complements the open square and surrounding 19th–20th-century market buildings rather than dominating them, reinforcing a sense of civic history rather than monumental grandeur. Locally the statue doubles as a cultural touchstone: it’s routinely dressed up during festivals and sporting events and features on postcards, souvenirs and city branding. Its placement on the market square—near the river and main pedestrian routes—makes it a visible reminder of Oulu’s trading past and community spirit.
