The Harem occupies the private residential wing of Topkapı Palace in Istanbul’s historic Fatih district, beside the imperial courts overlooking the Bosphorus and Golden Horn. Expanded by successive Ottoman sultans, it was a highly regulated household where the sultan’s family, concubines, servants, and eunuchs lived, studied, and worked under a strict hierarchy led by the valide sultan, the sultan’s mother. Its sequence of narrow passages, courtyards, baths, and richly decorated chambers reveals both domestic life and imperial protocol. İznik tiles, gilded inscriptions, carved doors, stained glass, and painted ceilings create intimate compositions, while windows and arcades occasionally open to wider palace and water views. The contrast between dim corridors and luminous tiled rooms is central to the Harem’s visual character.
