📍 Japan
Tōdai-ji’s Chūmon, or Central Gate, stands just south of the Daibutsuden in Nara, marking the approach to the Great Buddha Hall. The hall beyond houses the temple’s monumental bronze Buddha. Covered corridors extend from either side of the gate, while its vermilion columns and broad tiled roof frame a view of the much larger hall behind. Together, the gate and hall show how the temple’s architecture builds a sense of scale along the approach.
