Tiananmen Square in Beijing is the third largest city square in the world and is also the world's largest city square. Located in the heart of Beijing, it is surrounded by iconic sites such as the Great Hall of the People and the Monument to the People's Heroes. It covers an area of 440,000 square meters and is the site of important events such as New Year's celebrations, parades, and the raising of the national flag. Visitors of Tiananmen Square can also visit the nearby National Museum, take a free tour of the historic Beijing buildings, and shop in the nearby stores. There are also monuments to communist leaders such as Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping, and a Martyr's Monument commemorating those who died or suffered during the Chinese Revolution of 1949.
