📍 Thailand
Thotsakan is the green-faced giant guardian at Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn, in Bangkok Yai on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River. He represents the ten-headed demon king of Lanka in the Ramakien, Thailand’s version of the Ramayana. Here, the epic’s antagonist serves as a protector, standing beside the white-faced Sahatsadecha at the gateway to the temple’s ordination hall. His tiered crown, fierce expression, richly patterned costume, and hands clasped around an upright club give the figure its recognizable silhouette. The pair are known locally as the giants of Wat Chaeng, another name for Wat Arun; their contrasting green and white faces and imposing scale make this gateway visually distinct from the temple’s famous riverside prang.
