Thomas Jefferson Memorial

The Thomas Jefferson Memorial is a monument to the third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson. It is located in Washington, DC near the Potomac River. The memorial sits at the site of the former President's house and was erected in 1943. The memorial is made of white marble and features a 19 foot tall bronze statue of Jefferson. Inside the memorial are excerpts from his most famous works including the Declaration of Independence, the Virginia Statute of Religious Freedom, and the Founder's Letter to the Danbury Baptist Association. It is surrounded by the Tidal Basin with a view of the Capitol building. The grounds feature cherry trees and a large reflecting pool, a popular spot for tourists. The memorial is free and open to the public during all times, with the exception of very early mornings.
