The Shard
📍 From London Bridge Bus Station, United Kingdom
The Shard is a tapering glass skyscraper beside London Bridge station in Southwark, south of the River Thames. Designed by Renzo Piano and completed in 2012, the roughly 310-metre tower combines offices, restaurants, a hotel and public viewing galleries in a single vertical landmark. Its angled glass façades rise into an open, fragmented spire, giving the building its name and a distinctive outline on London’s skyline. Reflections of clouds and changing skies alter its colour, while the nearby rooflines of Borough Market and Southwark Cathedral provide a striking contrast in scale and architectural character. From the upper viewing levels, the Thames becomes the organizing line of the panorama, with Tower Bridge and the dense towers of the City revealing how closely London’s historic river crossings sit beside its modern commercial districts.
