The Second Swing Bridge
📍 From Bridge, New Zealand
The Second Swing Bridge in Canterbury, New Zealand is one of the iconic landmarks of the colonial era in the region. The bridge, which spans the turbulent Waimakariri River, was built in 1920 to ferry vehicles across the river when the existing bridge and ferries couldn't handle the heavy traffic. It is still in remarkable condition for its age, and you can experience it for yourself by walking the metal grated walkway and stopping to take in the incredible river views. The bridge is also a popular fishing spot and can be admired from the nearby Park Island lookout. A visit to the Second Swing Bridge provides a unique experience of the colonial history of Canterbury and is sure to create some unforgettable memories.
