The Rotunda
📍 United States
The Rotunda anchors the north end of the Lawn at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, forming the centerpiece of Thomas Jefferson’s Academical Village. Designed by Jefferson and inspired by Rome’s Pantheon, it originally housed the university library; placing a library rather than a chapel at the center reflected his vision of an institution organized around learning. Its domed profile, Corinthian portico, and red-brick wings create the university’s defining silhouette. From the Lawn, the long rows of student rooms and colonnades lead the eye toward the Rotunda with strong symmetry and depth, while closer views emphasize the contrast between white columns, brickwork, and the copper-toned dome.
