📍 From Trafalgar Square, United Kingdom
The National Gallery occupies the north side of Trafalgar Square, where its neoclassical portico and dome form a stately backdrop to Nelson’s Column and the square’s fountains. Founded in 1824, it houses the United Kingdom’s national collection of Western European painting, spanning the late medieval period to the early 20th century, with works by Leonardo da Vinci, Titian, Rembrandt, Turner, Monet and Van Gogh. From the square, the broad steps emphasize the façade’s symmetry and offer an elevated view toward Whitehall, while after dark the illuminated columns stand out against the movement of central London.
