📍 From Tower, China
Simatai is a dramatic section of the Great Wall in Miyun District, northeastern Beijing, rising above Gubei Water Town and the valleys of the Yan Mountains. Its closely spaced watchtowers, crenellated brickwork and steep stairways preserve much of the wall’s Ming-era character, while the route’s sharp climbs reveal how fortifications followed the natural ridgeline rather than flattening it. From below, the wall forms a broken line across the peaks; from the accessible towers, layered mountains and the tiled roofs and waterways of Gubei create striking contrasts of scale and geometry. Some unrestored stretches and higher towers are closed for conservation, so visitors should remain on the designated route.
