📍 United States
The Gateway Arch rises from the Mississippi River’s west bank in downtown St. Louis as the centerpiece of Gateway Arch National Park. Designed by Eero Saarinen and completed in 1965, the 630-foot stainless-steel monument commemorates westward expansion and the city’s historic role as a gateway to the West. From a distance, its symmetrical curve draws a stark outline against the sky; up close, the smooth steel catches changing light, giving the same familiar shape a different appearance throughout the day.
