The Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri, is the tallest monument in the United States, standing 630 feet (192m) tall. The arch was designed in 1947 as a monument to Thomas Jefferson and the story of westward expansion of the US in the early 19th century. The monument is part of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, which commemorates the pioneers that explored and settled the area. The Arch was completed in 1965, and visitors can take a tram ride to the top of the arch for a breathtaking view of the city. On the grounds are various exhibits, including a museum detailing the city’s role in the journey of the original settlers. Visitors can also explore nearby, restored buildings of the old riverfront. There is an Interpretive Center located nearby that focuses on the history of the area and its significance for African-Americans. The Gateway Arch is a must-see for any St. Louis visitor.
